What is the Zipper Foot
The zipper foot is a presser foot with a narrow sole or a flat sole with a notch that allows the needle to sew very close to the zipper teeth. It is designed so the needle can pass on either side of the zipper without hitting the zipper pull. It is essential for inserting zippers in garments, bags, and home textiles.

Which Machine It Fits
Single needle lockstitch machines. Common models: Juki DDL-8700, Brother S-7200, Singer 591. Available in narrow, wide, and adjustable versions. Some zipper feet have a movable shank so the foot can be positioned on either side of the needle. Also available for overlock machines for some zipper applications.

Key Features
Narrow sole or notched sole. Sews close to zipper teeth. Needle can pass on either side of the zipper. Adjustable position on some models. Works with invisible, exposed, and metal zippers. Essential for garment and bag zippers.

Practical Example 1 — Invisible Zipper
On a dress invisible zipper, the zipper foot's groove holds the zipper coil while the needle sews close to the teeth. The zipper disappears into the seam when closed. The foot makes invisible zipper insertion fast and clean.

Practical Example 2 — Exposed Jeans Zipper
On a jeans zipper, the zipper foot sews along the zipper tape close to the teeth. The operator uses the narrow sole to get close to the teeth without hitting the zipper pull. The jeans zipper is straight and strong.

Practical Example 3 — Bag Zipper
On a canvas bag zipper, the zipper foot sews the zipper tape to the bag panel. The adjustable foot is set to the right side for the first pass and to the left side for the second pass. The bag zipper is straight and even.

Practical Example 4 — Cushion Zipper
On a cushion cover with a concealed zipper, the zipper foot sews the two panels to the zipper tape. The cushion opening is neat and the zipper closes smoothly.

Why Use It Instead of Standard Foot
A standard foot cannot get close to the zipper teeth. The needle hits the zipper pull or the foot cannot reach. The zipper foot's narrow sole or notch allows the needle to sew right up to the zipper teeth on either side, producing a clean, professional zipper insertion.
Common Mistakes
Using the wrong zipper foot for the zipper type. Not adjusting the foot position for left and right sides. Sewing too fast and hitting the zipper pull. Not aligning the zipper tape properly. Using a standard foot for zipper insertion.
When to Use It
Use the zipper foot for any operation that involves zippers: invisible zippers, exposed zippers, jeans zippers, bag zippers, cushion zippers, and any garment or home textile with a zipper.
