What is the TEXTJOIN Function

The TEXTJOIN function joins text from multiple cells or ranges with a delimiter you specify, and can automatically skip empty cells. It is more powerful than CONCATENATE for joining ranges of text. TEXTJOIN is available in Excel 2019, 365, and later.

Formula: =TEXTJOIN(delimiter, ignore_empty, text1, [text2], ...)

Practical Example 1

A2:A5 has names with some blanks. Join them with a comma.

Type: =TEXTJOIN(comma space, TRUE, A2:A5)

Result: name1, name2, name3 (blanks skipped)

Practical Example 2

Join first and last names with a space.

Type: =TEXTJOIN(space, TRUE, A2, B2)

Result: full name

Practical Example 3

Join values from a whole column.

Type: =TEXTJOIN(comma, TRUE, A:A)

Result: all non-empty values joined by commas

Practical Example 4

Include blanks by setting ignore_empty to FALSE.

Type: =TEXTJOIN(comma, FALSE, A2:A5)

Result: values joined with empty placeholders

When to Use It

TEXTJOIN is used for creating comma-separated lists, for combining names with proper spacing, for building labels from multiple cells, and for any formula where you need to join a whole range of text.
