What is the LOWER Function
The LOWER function converts all uppercase letters in a text string to lowercase. It is useful for standardizing data, especially email addresses and user input.
Formula: =LOWER(text)
Practical Example 1
A2 contains EXCEL.
Type: =LOWER(A2)
Result: excel
Practical Example 2
Standardize an email address to lowercase.
Type: =LOWER(A2)
Result: the email in lowercase
Practical Example 3
Combine LOWER with EXACT for a case-insensitive comparison workaround.
Type: =EXACT(LOWER(A2), LOWER(B2))
Result: TRUE if the values match ignoring case
When to Use It
LOWER is used for standardizing email addresses, for normalizing user input, for data cleaning before matching, and for any formula where case should be ignored.
