What is the DATE Function
The DATE function creates a valid Excel date from separate year, month, and day values. It automatically handles month overflow and underflow, so you can trust it to return the correct date even when you pass unusual numbers.
Formula: =DATE(year, month, day)
Practical Example 1
A2 has year, B2 has month, C2 has day.
Type: =DATE(A2, B2, C2)
Result: a valid Excel date
Practical Example 2
Create a date directly with numbers.
Type: =DATE(2026, 10, 17)
Result: 17-Oct-2026
Practical Example 3
Month 13 automatically rolls to January of the next year.
Type: =DATE(2026, 13, 1)
Result: 01-Jan-2027
Practical Example 4
Build the first day of the current month.
Type: =DATE(YEAR(TODAY()), MONTH(TODAY()), 1)
Result: the first day of this month
When to Use It
DATE is used for building report dates dynamically, for combining date parts from separate columns, for calculating anniversaries and due dates, and for any formula where you need a valid date value.
