What is the COUNTA Function

The COUNTA function counts all cells that are not empty. Unlike COUNT which counts only numbers, COUNTA includes text, numbers, symbols, and even spaces. It is useful when you want to know how many entries exist in a list.

Formula: =COUNTA(value1, [value2], ...)

Practical Example 1

A list of customer names is in A2 to A20 with some blank cells.

Type: =COUNTA(A2:A20)

Result: the number of cells that contain any value

Practical Example 2

Check if all team members have submitted their reports.

Type: =IF(COUNTA(B2:B20)=19, All submitted, Some missing)

Result: message showing completion status

Practical Example 3

Count entries in multiple columns.

Type: =COUNTA(A2:A20, B2:B20)

Result: total count of non-empty cells in both columns

Practical Example 4

Count how many rows have a name.

Type: =COUNTA(A:A) - 1

Result: count of names excluding the header row

When to Use It

COUNTA is used for attendance lists, survey responses, inventory check-ins, customer databases, and any list where you need to know how many entries are filled in.
