What is the CONCATENATE Function

The CONCATENATE function joins two or more text strings into one. You can combine text from different cells, add spaces, commas, or any other separator, and build a single combined string. This is very useful for creating full names, addresses, or labels.

Formula: =CONCATENATE(text1, [text2], ...)

Practical Example 1

A2 contains first name and B2 contains last name.

Type: =CONCATENATE(A2, space, B2)

Result: the full name with a space in between

Practical Example 2

Combine city, state, and country into a full address.

Type: =CONCATENATE(A2, comma space, B2, comma space, C2)

Result: City, State, Country

Practical Example 3

Add text and a number together.

Type: =CONCATENATE(Total: space, B2)

Result: Total: 1200

Practical Example 4

You can also use the ampersand symbol for the same result.

Type: =A2 & space & B2

Result: the full name

When to Use It

CONCATENATE is used to create full names from first and last names, to build addresses, to create custom labels and codes, to combine text with numbers, and for any situation where you need to join text.
