Fabric is usually 50-70% of a garment's FOB. Book too little and production stops; book too much and money sits in leftover rolls. Consumption should be calculated, then confirmed by the marker.

Knit garments - body measurement method (kg per dozen)

Formula: kg/dz = L × W × 2 × GSM × 12 ÷ 10,000,000

  • L (cm) = body length + sleeve length + allowances for seams and hems
  • W (cm) = ½ chest + seam allowance
  • × 2 = front and back
  • GSM = finished fabric weight (g/m²)
  • 10,000,000 converts cm² × g/m² into kg

Example: body length 72 cm, sleeve 22 cm, allowances 6 cm → L = 100 cm. ½ chest 52 + 4 = 56 cm. GSM 160.

100 × 56 × 2 × 160 × 12 ÷ 10,000,000 = 2.15 kg/dz net. Add 8-10% wastage → about 2.35 kg/dz to book.

Rib and collar are calculated separately (often by piece size × GSM, or by the supplier's per-piece consumption for flat-knit collars).
