What is the SUMIF Function

The SUMIF function adds values in a range that meet a condition you specify. It is perfect for category, region, or status totals, and it is one of the most useful functions for business reporting.

Formula: =SUMIF(range, criteria, [sum_range])

Practical Example 1

Column A has products, column B has sales. Add only Pen sales.

Type: =SUMIF(A2:A6, Pen, B2:B6)

Result: the total of Pen sales only

Practical Example 2

Add sales above 500.

Type: =SUMIF(B2:B100, >500)

Result: the total of sales above 500

Practical Example 3

Use a wildcard to sum all products starting with Pen.

Type: =SUMIF(A2:A100, Pen*, B2:B100)

Result: the total of all products starting with Pen

Practical Example 4

Reference criteria from another cell.

Type: =SUMIF(A2:A100, F2, B2:B100)

Result: the total matching the criteria in F2

When to Use It

SUMIF is used for product-wise revenue, for expense category totals, for department-wise salary sums, for region-wise sales, and for any report that needs a conditional total.
