What is the MOD Function

The MOD function returns the remainder after dividing one number by another. It is very useful for odd/even classification, cyclic numbering, and bucketing.

Formula: =MOD(number, divisor)

Practical Example 1

A2 contains 17. Divide by 5.

Type: =MOD(A2, 5)

Result: 2

Practical Example 2

Check if a number is even or odd.

Type: =IF(MOD(A2, 2)=0, Even, Odd)

Result: Even or Odd

Practical Example 3

Group rows into batches of 3.

Type: =MOD(ROW(), 3)

Result: 0, 1, or 2 depending on the row

Practical Example 4

Find the last digit of a number.

Type: =MOD(A2, 10)

Result: the last digit

When to Use It

MOD is used for odd/even classification, for round-robin scheduling, for cyclic numbering, for bucketing rows into groups, and for any formula where the remainder matters.
