What is the COUNT Function

The COUNT function counts how many cells in a range contain numbers. It ignores text, blanks, logical values, and errors. This makes COUNT perfect for checking how many numeric entries you have in a dataset.

Formula: =COUNT(value1, [value2], ...)

Practical Example 1

Cells D2 to D10 contain a mix of numbers, text, and blanks.

Type: =COUNT(D2:D10)

Result: 7 (the number of cells that contain actual numbers)

Practical Example 2

Check if all expected values are filled.

Type: =IF(COUNT(A1:A10)=10, Complete, Incomplete)

Result: Complete if all 10 cells have numbers

Practical Example 3

Count numbers in an entire column.

Type: =COUNT(A:A)

Result: the total count of numeric cells in column A

Practical Example 4

Count numbers in multiple ranges.

Type: =COUNT(A1:A10, C1:C10)

Result: the combined count of both ranges

When to Use It

COUNT is used in quality control to count valid readings, in HR to count numeric employee IDs, in finance to count transaction amounts, and in any data audit where you need to know how many numeric values are present.
