What is the CHOOSE Function

The CHOOSE function picks a value from a list based on an index number. You provide the index and a list of values, and CHOOSE returns the value at that position. It is like a simple lookup that does not need a table.

Formula: =CHOOSE(index_num, value1, [value2], ...)

Practical Example 1

Cell B2 contains the number 2. You want the 2nd item from a list of medals.

Type: =CHOOSE(B2, Gold, Silver, Bronze)

Result: Silver

Practical Example 2

A dropdown returns 1, 2, or 3 for months. You want the month name.

Type: =CHOOSE(B2, January, February, March)

Result: the month name matching the number

Practical Example 3

You have day numbers 1 to 7 and want day names.

Type: =CHOOSE(A2, Sun, Mon, Tue, Wed, Thu, Fri, Sat)

Result: the day name

Practical Example 4

Use CHOOSE with a number to select a discount rate for a loyalty tier.

Type: =CHOOSE(A2, 0.05, 0.10, 0.15, 0.20)

Result: the discount rate for that tier

When to Use It

CHOOSE is used for simple mapping of numbers to labels, for loyalty tier discounts, for month and day names, and for any situation where you have a small fixed list of options.
