What is the AVERAGE Function

The AVERAGE function calculates the arithmetic mean of a group of numbers. It adds up all the numbers in the range and divides by the count of numbers. Blank cells and text are ignored automatically. This makes AVERAGE perfect for finding typical or middle values in a dataset.

Formula: =AVERAGE(number1, [number2], ...)

Practical Example 1

Marks of five students are in cells C2 to C6: 70, 85, 90, 60, 75.

Type: =AVERAGE(C2:C6)

Result: 76

Practical Example 2

Monthly sales for January to June are in B2 to B7. You want the average monthly revenue.

Type: =AVERAGE(B2:B7)

Result: the mean monthly sales figure

Practical Example 3

You want to round the average to one decimal place.

Type: =ROUND(AVERAGE(C2:C6), 1)

Result: 76.0

Practical Example 4

You have data with some zeros that should be ignored, such as days with no sales.

Type: =AVERAGEIF(C2:C6, >0)

Result: the average excluding zeros

When to Use It

AVERAGE is used in education to calculate class averages, in sales to find average monthly revenue, in manufacturing to measure average defect rates, and in healthcare to measure average wait times. It is one of the most common and useful functions in Excel.
