5S is the foundation of lean manufacturing: a clean, organised workplace where problems are easy to see. On a sewing floor it saves search time, reduces defects and makes changeovers faster.

SMeaningOn the sewing line
SortKeep only what is neededRemove old bundles, unused attachments and broken tools
Set in orderA place for everythingMarked positions for bins, scissors, spare needles; bundles always on the same side
ShineClean and inspectDaily machine cleaning, checking oil leaks and thread paths
StandardiseSame way every timePhotos of the standard workstation, cleaning checklists
SustainMake it a habitWeekly 5S audits with scores posted by line

Getting started

  1. Start with one pilot line and take "before" photos.
  2. Do a red-tag day: everything not needed goes to a red-tag area for a decision.
  3. Mark floor lanes for trolleys and WIP.
  4. Make a simple checklist and audit weekly.
  5. Share the "after" photos and scores - people like to see the change.

Tip: 5S is not a cleaning campaign. Ask "does this help the operator work faster and with better quality?" for every change.
